Xmas Lights

#hornsby #sydney #xmaslights

in a tiny short street running parallel to the rail that dead ends in a pathway up to Pretoria Parade there is one home owner year after year turning his front yard into a Christmas fantasy.

Walk down and take a look. They were still up last night!

If you're in that area this evening Sunday 21 the Baptist Church on the opposite corner will be having its FREE sausage sizzle and carols concert 6pm onwards.

Finally a reminder if you have found any photos useful over this year well I do have a Paypal tipjar and an Amazon wish list? Thank you!

A stormy week

#sydney #hornsby #storms
Its been a week of storms and rain every evening but last nights storm front was bliss for photographers . This is just one shot from my mobile. Spare a thought and share an umbrella with anyone who has to walk home in this weather since there's forecast and if you have a house check  your roof for cracked tiles !

Twilight White

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014
I'm seeing colored roses trending again on Google Plus so here's a reminder white roses are lovely too! I like the way the shadows fell across the rose emphasizing the centre. It was early evening when I took or perhaps not quite evening ... the sun was setting but being an Australian summer night the last of the light was still strong!

Bl&&dy Photographers

"Bl%%dy Photographers" Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

This is one of the last shots taken by my now defunct 10 years camera.

Hopefully the new camera will resolve the overexposure problem partially.

This was taken on a very wet afternoon so wet even the lorikeets looked damp and were so intent on boosting their energy levels they moved down onto lower branches and kept on feeding while giving me that accusatory "Bl&&dy Photographer. honestly you've have thought they would have learnt by now the shiny box is not a threat. I suspect word has somehow gotten around amongst the local lorikeets that I refuse to bribe them with anything but plain water.

I suspect they want to me to bribe them with fruit or honey water? !

Hornsby Get outside and enjoy the Sun!

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

MMM I hope this isnt going to look over exposed on screen. It seemed okay on my laptop but ... anyway if you're reading this Sunday afternoon get outside and enjoy the last of the sun before the southerly change brings more clouds!
I can happily report as my window faces south I can see no signs of the southerly on the horizon yet. Yes I'm on my laptop BUT I've been for my walk already!

Hopefully I'll have some great new shots soon. The old sony finally died and I HAD to buy a new camera which has about  25 functions apart from the ones I actually need or want need but a much better zoom! OH lala from 5x to 30 for the zoom! Cross fingers and Use the paypal tip jar!

Bamboo Sky

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

At last the sun is out again!
So what do you think of the crop to a "scroll" format?
Yes I was thinking of Asian painting.

Would anyone like to see this as a print? I wish some of mine would start selling. What I'd really love to do is combine my scholar and artist skills and do a photo shoot circling Mt Fuji showing some of the famous scenes from prints and how they look today. However that requires money for airfares and accommodation.

July Fungi

Mushroom Study
Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

With all the rain we've been getting there's going to be plenty of opportunities to photograph mushrooms and fungi. Just don't pick them to eat and no shroom jokes.
This is me doing the wabi sabi thing again. The beauty of simple things and the contrast between the green and the shapes and colors of the mushrooms.

SAN BIRDS

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

With a wide variety of food available the grounds of the SAN hospital are a great environment for magpies lorikeets and other birds especially near the Fox Valley road bus stop where the birds love to check up and see if any bored humans are snacking while waiting for the next bus.

Hornsby HAKKEI

HORNSBY HAKKEI
A Challenge for local photographers

Some of you may have heard of the Eight Scenic Views of Lake Biwa used as a theme for Japanese art or even of the the Views of Xiao and Xiang which inspired the idea.

I propose we establish or try to an EIGHT VIEWS OF HORNSBY SHIRE

What do you think are 8 Iconic Scenic themes worth photographing?

The list of 8 in Japan is :

Geese descending or flying over Katata on the Lake's shore.

Perhaps the cockatoos daily commute up form the gorge and back again or the ravens in flight or our local rainbow lorikeets?

Next there's Night Rain at the Shrine.

Perhaps Night rain or a thunder storm arriving at the end of a long hot day?

The snow on Hira.

No snow ! What about the fog rising from Galston gorge making the world disappear into a sea of white?

Temple Bells at Miidera.

We don't have scenic gates pagodas or temple gardens.

Perhaps the Picardy Rose Walk at the Park?

The Moon seen from Ishiyamadera.

We can often see the Moon rising not over a lake but certainly from our balconies and back yards or windows?

The fishing village

Brooklyn perhaps?

The Seta bridge.

Berowra Waters ferry? Brooklyn bridge?

Lastly sail boats coming into port.

Brooklyn?  the Hawkesbury ?

Your ideas and comments are invited.

Rau Ram

Anyone want some plant cuttings? As well as rau ram I have a couple of small pots of sage an outdoor hardy orchid and a begonia with so many leaves I spare several for propagating so if you live near hornsby I'm open to cash or swapping for compost or potting mix ?

HALTING STATE

Halting state is a Charles Stross SF novel and also the current state of this blog.
My right arm has a fracture of the neck of the radius bone. It doesnt require a cast or metal pins but I'm typing one handed and will have my right hand in a sling or a week or longer so ... well even using my phonecam onehanded will be awkward.

So this blog is on hiatus! Cos just typing this catch up post is uncomfortable!

Another shot of Psycho the lorikeet

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

Yes its another shot of Psycho the lorikeet. Once again he or she is about to berate me for my lack of fluency in Rainbow Lorikeet. Mind you I think the message about NO SWEETIES may be sinking in? I'm willing to put out water but I'm sure there's enough fruit and other flowering trees in this suburb that they do not need supplementary feeding from me. Or do they?

The Breaker

This machine is used for breaking up concrete slabs.

It was recently in use at the building site on the corner of Pound Road.

I'm surprised no other Hornsby photographers noticed this opportunity?

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

Yes it is a rather severe crop but the crop emphasizes the angles that caught my eye and the contrast of thick and thin against the clouds!

Hornsby TAFE CUTS

#hornsby #tafe class cutting ... it's not just #finearts or #hornsby

classes for disabled students have gone from free to fee paying regardless of whether of not the disabled student is on welfare support and tradies are being effected too with apprentices who work days having that one final class they need to get certificates and diplomas moved to other days and daytime.

What to do? Contact your local Mps Federal and State.

Tell them how you or a friend or relative or business are effected. Make sure you include course details or whether the problem is cost time or the course being moved to a another tafe and a combo of all three!

The return of the magnolia a local horror story

A couple of months ago one of the companies in the Centrelink building or maybe Centrelink apparently decided the magnificent magnolia in front of the building was ... blocking light or something?

It was a horrible and shocking moment for me to walk past and see this beautiful tree cut down to mere stumps. I thought it might die. Happily it has recovered and is now shooting out new foliage so hopefully next August we will get some flowers though I fear the display will be very diminished this year.

Hmph at least the flowers will be on eye level?

Anything is better then having to see those barren stumps !

Oh the horror!

Accidental Typography at Hornsby

This is a shop sign at Hornsby. I showed a snippet on FB and Google and a couple of people wanted to see more. So here's the photos at a slighter higher resolution?

The summer heat has actually made the lettering more interesting with the curl effect. Or not? Please note both photos copyright Julie Vaux 2014

Hornsby Park Rose Walk

Copyright Julie Vaux 2014

Yes I know its one of my favorite subjects the Hornsby park Picardy and other roses walk. People its going to be overcast today. Less risk of overexposed shots! The paths overexposed but  I believe this works cos its makes clear this is a summer shot and creates a focal point in the middle hopefully leading the eye towards the pergola ? A bit postcardy? Well I can't figure out why our Picardy Rose Walk isn't pushed as a tourist attraction by Hornsby council?

testing photo attachment

fellow bloggers while photo attachments work for google plus we currently are being  told to use draft.blogger.com if we want to attach photos

this is a test of that enjoy this old 60s style photo

Spiral Bark pattern

This tree is opposite Hornsby RSL and stands out for the odd spiral pattern in its bark. The trees on either side of it do not have it. This tree however I suspect was burnt by lightning maybe. When it peels in summer the bark spirals down and around the tree and doesnt fall down in long strips. Does anyone know if it was ever struck by lightning?
