Tree Ferns in Normanhurst park

Copyright Julie Vaux 2013
This tree fern was shot at an angle from higher on on a slope. If you want to see mature tree ferns over 6 feet tall and don't mend a path you will definitely need good shoes and a dry day to descend check out the trail that runs down along the creek on the eastern side of Normanhurst park.

Eugene Drinking

One of the reasons feral peacocks linger near housing is probably food and water.

I suspect given the intermittent water flow in local creeks Eugnee and family also make use of pet food and water bowls or browse on garden plants?

Be patient with them and remember they also hunt and eat baby snakes and may be the reason  why I havnt read any local reports about kids and pets getting bitten by snakes for a while?

Cristmas is coming

Christmas is coming and with it discount sales.

I'ld love to buy a new better camera so people if you have enjoyed my photos please let other people know about this blog or about my Cafepress Shop

Voxy Visions

I need the extra income since I have an UNPAID "vacation" due to community colleges and art centres and TAFE that provide me with casual work shutting down to February.

... and since TAFE funding cuts reduced my work hours this year ....

Copyright Julie Vaux 2013
oh and I also donate part of all sales to charity so if you make a modern ironic Xmas card let people know about this design and if you don't please try to buy cards that donate part of their proceeds to local charities?

and follow this blog ... I usually design and give away at least one free to download  e-card  file sometime in december.

Mrs Eugene the Peahen

Eugene the Normanhurst Peacock has I believe 2 wives that have been seen but when I had a chance to photo them only one was around.

Hopefully the rest of his family are still alive and well.

If you this bird it is NOT a scrub turkey.

Peacocks have 2 long claws so don't let them fight with your dogs.

Fun with furniture and fabrics

FUN WITH FURNITURE

For the last couple of months I've been having terrible fun NOT with furniture.

A relative left the world and I'm OH TOO SLOWLY trying to re-arrange the furnishings disposing selling giving away OR NOT

Take this pair of cabinets for example.

Okay their's  old but not  fashionable 50s retro thing
but it has all 4 legs only a few marks
and the drawers all work and can I sell the pair for a mere 50 dollars ? Nope.

Then there's this chest of drawers again 50 dollars no missing legs

and has it sold ? nope?

I tried gumtree and 2 facebook groups.

Ah are you thinking dump it or give it to charity?

Since I don't have a car or ute I can't cos to donate to the Salvos ... well they only have one truck that has to be booked in advance and theres' partly some kind of  issue about our car park ramp and OHS  and their truck being too big and uh

Anyone care to make me a offer?

Then there's fabrics. I got left boxes and bags of pieces of silk cotton and other stuff I just can't use. I don't sew. I have actually managed to sell half of that.

I checked prices I'm offering about a 75% discount.

I sent email to several craft organisation which went unanswered.

Fortunately about half the material has done to crafters and costumiers.

But ... stuff still left.

If you know anyone who quilts and needs small pieces show them this and tell I also have larger pieces of silk left. 10 dollars a bag. Discounts if you buy 3 bags.

Hornsby NSW pickup cash only Gmail me.

Spread the word. Meanwhile whimper grumble I'll be outside. Must go and see what's surviving the weather out on the balcony!

That's another story on the angst  of rooftop gardening!

VERY OLD COOK BOOKS AT HORNSBY LIBRARY

If you are or know an artist or illustrator you might want to check out Hornsby Library ongoing attempt to empty out the STACKS section.

There's 2 tables of REALLY OLD books. Really old which means you could scan and copy the older styles illos for collages etc and probably not have to worry about copyright?

Something to think about.

Council Cleanup Day OCT 27 2013

It's Council cleanup day ... well in my area of Hornsby at least

Here's a good example of a well organized neatly stack pile.

Scavengers and recyclers who are not council staff please if you pull piles apart hunting for items please do not scatter stuff all over paths and nature strips.

Council staff we ALL know there's one spot near a certain telegraph pole near a certain bridge that people use as a dumping spot. Could we make that an official pickup point?

retro cleanup

I'm cleaning up and clearing out some retro furniture items?

Anyone got a use for this?

$40  will lower price further if you buy some of the other stuff I'm trying to sell or if you cart off some of the stuff I cant put on on the kerbside.

Yes Hornsby biannual twice yearly kerbside cleanup is coming soon  but they dont pick up from my block of units ... snarl ... however further down the street they will ... so I'm expecting to see and hear some odd late night noises as nearby unit dwellers and scavengers get in each others way trying to sneak things onto heaps or messing them up searching for salvage.

More on this next time including a before and after report!

Spot the lorikeet

Spot the lorikeet
a couple of photos that show just how well those brightly colored feathers can blend in with trees in Reddy Park.

I could hear they up in the trees and I'm farsighted not shortsighted but it still took me five minutes to spot them. These birds are bright green red and blue but at a distance those intense hues blend to a dark shadow. Amazing!

Thursday is Market Day

Go early if you can the kale and spinach tend to go quickly and stock up on blood oranges as their short season will end soon!

Accursed Cupboard

Will no one rid me of this accursed cupboard?

ITS FREE HORNSBY PICKUP
it has 2 bottom drawers stands about 6ft high

Why is it free cos its got to be carried up a flight of stairs into a lift and down to a carpark but its FREE!

I can't lift it myself and don't  have a car or van and while I'ld love to donate it to a local charity most of them don't do pickups?

I also have some other freebies and some old furniture thats much less bulky available. Plus I just don't like this cupboard.

The relative I inherited this from liked cupboards with closed doors.

As a result of this I had to spend weeks sorting through stuff crammed into cupboards that was unlabelled.

For some strange reason I now want to switch and move  all my remaining cupboards and property and books and clothes  into or onto shelves  and semi transparent containers all clearly categorized and labelled.

So who wants a cupboard? FREE PICKUP HORNSBY
 please ? sob? whimper ...

Unfashionable Roses

Remember these?

This plant is a rose geranium related however distantly to geraniums like these below.  While potted geraniums with large blooms are still popular the "rose" geraniums in pots or as small trees and shrubs seem to be out of fashion possibly because their greatest strength is also their weakness; they grow quickly from cuttings but hence need pruning.

And why call it a rose geranium?

If you have one pick up a leaf and snap it open. In the rose geraniums and other members of the pelargonium group there are essential oils and the leaves can smell of mint or rose or other aromas.

I was going to get rid or prune back drasticly  most of my geraniums but I'm going to try to sell or swap my cuttings and prunings.

Going back to the top image this one has gone "leggy". I however don't want the long stem look. I'm trying to slowly and gently coax this one into a better shape with cuttings here and there.

If anyone wants some cuttings to start their own plants let me know. I'ld love to swap for  some extra empty pots!

This younger plant looks a bit straggly but its a cutting in the same pot as another geranium cutting and after they flower unless some one buys this I'll prune again for a better shape using the cuttings to start new plants. You can buy or swap for this one too!  Make me an offer!
